My favorite thing about podcast marketing is making valuable partnerships because they work and I like making new friends. Partnering with shows is the easiest way to jump into the podcasting mosh pit. So how do you find people to dance with?
The first thing I do when I get a client is sit down, get cozy, and open up a spreadsheet so I can start making a list of my clientโs podcast friends. I feel a little like Iโm setting the show up for a play date. What shows would my show get along with? It doesnโt have to be an exact content match (a true-crime show can play with a celebrity show.) I start by coming up with the first shows that pop into my mind, then use the following tools to find more.
Apple Podcasts: Find your show (or one similar to it that you like) and search for it in Apple Podcasts. Scroll down to โlisteners also likedโฆโ
Listen Notes: Find your show (or one similar to it) in Listen Notes. Click on โRecommendationsโ to get a list of similar shows. If you get the premium account, you can get the email addresses of the podcaster. (Which is helpful when you want to reach out to secure partnership.)
BONUS TIP: If you donโt have a subscription, you can still find the podcasterโs email address by going to the RSS (youโll see a bunch of code) and with command + f, search โemail.โ The email address is in there. h/t Arielle!
Podchaser: The most advanced and comprehensive podcast database. You can easily find the most relevant podcasts, qualify them through data (e.g., listenership estimates, demographics, chart positions), and access podcast contacts for outreach. There's advanced search / sorting features to help you quickly sift through (about 2 million podcasts) and identify the best options.
Player FM: Google โPlayer FM + ____โ (a topic) and youโll get a list of shows based on that topic.
Rephonic: I get so excited about showing Rephonic to my clients that I get disappointed when they donโt get excited enough about it. Enter your show or one like it into Rephonicโs search bar and you can explore your podcastโs neighborhood, finding shows (based on data) that have things in common. Once you find a show thatโs a good math, search again. (And repeat.)
Newsletters: I discover new shows through newsletters all the time. We will get into this later, but hereโs a good place to start: Bello Collective, Inside Podcasting, Podcast the Newsletter (shameless plug,) EarBuds.
Thanks for reading. Email me your tips and tricks, comments, or just tell me about a show I should know about.
