🌀Breaking Through the Podcast Echo Chamber 🌀
Get out of your comfort zone to find your next big marketing win!
Hi hello! Wil Williams reporting for duty in my first edition of ✨Podcast Marketing Magic✨! I started working with Tink back in October, and I’ve been loving every single moment – and now, I can’t wait to connect with you all here about marketing!
I broke out of my own podcast bubble when I made the leap to join the amazing Tink team, and it’s gotten me thinking about one of the biggest hurdles I see when podcasters are looking to co-market: the echo chamber.
And I hope to see you at today’s inaugural, ❣️SOLD OUT❣️ first installment of Podcast Group Therapy! I’ll be hosting with the brilliant Arielle Nissenblatt, talking all about making your podcast friends. Don’t want to miss out on the next session? Find out which topics we have coming up on our site, and don’t hesitate if one piques your interest!
Now, let’s get talking about how your podcast echo chamber is keeping you from your next big breakthrough in marketing.
What echo chamber?
Let’s think about podcast categories, the kind you establish when you set up a podcast feed. These categories can be things like true crime, business, film/TV. They can also be pigeonholes! When you market your podcast, are you only thinking of podcasts within your same niche? That’s a great place to start, absolutely – but don’t think you have to stay there forever.
Okay, well how do I break out?
Much of my advice boils down to something that I think is integral, mandatory, and vital for your success as a podcaster: become a great listener.
What podcasts do you love? What podcasts inspire you? Start there, and then think in a web (have you met our great friend Rephonic?). It might be difficult to cross-promote with a podcast you love that gets 100x the downloads as your show. But what about podcasts like those shows you love so much? Reach out to them!
What next?
Let’s take an even further step outside the box. My degree is in English education, so when I think about what my podcasts are about, I think about bibliographies. Work with the podcasts you’d cite in your bibliographies. If you have a film-focused chatcast, what podcasts exist about making films? What podcasts exist about film history? If you make a sci-fi fiction podcast, what about nonfiction podcasts focused on science? And, of course, the same applies in reverse!
Become voracious. Become curious. Become excited. And don’t sell yourself short! Your next big podcast audience breakthrough might be waiting in a podcast with a different format and a different vibe. Set up a promo swap. Have them guest on your podcast, and ask to guest on theirs. Run their trailer in your midroll and have them run yours. Shoot your shot, be sweet, and reciprocate!
Focus on the focus, and you’ll be golden.
Have you ever broken through your echo chamber and found surprising success? We want to hear about it!
✨ More Magic:
Do you find yourself obsessively checking your podcast’s stats? There’s a new challenge to refocus your creativity and benefit a charity of your choice — all by not checking your stats for 90 Days. We love this challenge by Mark Steadman of Morning Creative. You’re more than your numbers!
Ashley Carman, the GOAT, shares info on how to super easily get your podcast on YouTube, straight from the RSS.
Don’t forget about our Tink Promo Swap Database, a free tool that helped connect Amanda Bennett, Director of Strategic Partnerships at VIGEO, with a new podcast friend! We were so delighted to hear her success story:
Wanted to drop a "happy note" for a Tink Promo Swap Database win that I was recently part of between host Megan Dahlman of Self Care Simplified and host Philip Pape of Wits & Weights. Philip reached out to us and we ended up doing both an interview swap AND a promo swap to run to each other's audience after the guest episodes go live! (episodes on both shows will go live in late February) Since Philip serves a similar audience and shares key values around fitness, the collaboration was a great fit. Thank you for helping us connect with a new "podcast friend"!
