💭 How to actually use Chartable for podcast promos 💭
(when you're not placing ads in your podcast)
Recently, Spotify announced that they were rebranding podcast analytics firm Podsights to Spotify Ad Analytics. Since February 2022, podcast creators and advertisers have been conversing about Spotify’s acquisition of Podsights and Chartable. As more companies flock to digital audio solutions for customer acquisition, advertisers are becoming more concerned with results due to the importance of accurate measurement and actionable insights.
However, we often get asked by the independent creator: how do I actually use Chartable if I am not running ads on my podcast?
That’s where guest writer Faybeo'n Mickens is entering the chat. Buckle in! It’s gonna get mathematical and analytical in here.
But, first. A quick word from our sponsors —

💫 How to actually use Chartable, as an independent podcaster 💫
Spotify’s Chartable and Podsights (now Spotify Ad Analytics) are both great tools to use if and when you’re placing ads on your podcast. However, independent podcasters often don’t start placing ads on their podcasts for a while. Worry not! There are two tools Chartable offers that can (and should) be used for earned media efforts.
These are:
Chartable SmartPromos
Chartable Connect
Let’s dive into how to set up and use these tools.
Chartable SmartPromos
SmartPromos is a super useful tool when you’re doing promo swaps with a fellow podcaster. If you’ve set up a cross promo with a podcast friend in the last three months or so, it’s only natural that someone asked about SmartPromos or attaching a Chartable pixel to the ad.
🔴 Start here: Before setting up a SmartPromo, you will need to set up a Chartable account (there is a FREE option and the PRO level is actually 50% off currently). You will also need the cross promo partner’s publishing platform (ie Stitcher, Wondery, iHeart).
Here’s a quick step-by-step guide on setting up SmartPromos:
From your Chartable Dashboard, go to the Marketing section and select SmartPromos.
Once you’re in SmartPromos, select “Create Promo” at the top right corner.
Answer the following three questions:
What is the name of the show you're promoting?
Will the ad be dynamically inserted or baked into the episode?
What is the show the promotion is running on?
Lastly, select the publisher that your promo partner uses. (This can get tricky if the publisher isn’t listed. Just select the “I can’t find the publisher in this list” option and write it in).
Click “Create Promo” and you are all done! 😊
Chartable Connect
While Chartable can feel overwhelming at first, there are some really fun tools available for independent creators. My favorite tool is Connect!
Chartable Connect is basically a podcast matchmaking tool. It is a searchable database of podcasts and podcast data, making it easy for publishers to find other podcasts to work with for guest spots or podcast-to-podcast promotions.
➡️ How it works: The key to this function is the “request an introduction” option. Chartable will send an invite on your behalf to a potential partner. What I love about this option is that depending on if the show is “verified” you could surpass countless email threads of research and bugging the wrong department of a program and be in contact with the proper person for a successful partnership.
The one caveat: your subscription plan might determine the functionalities you receive with this feature.
On this note: have you used Chartable for anything? OR do you have any questions about how more/better to use Chartable tools?
🦄 52 Weeks of Podcast Growth
Send the listener survey. Do the dang thing!
Last week, we recommended creating a listener survey using Edison Research’s listener survey template. Now, it’s time to send that listener survey. You can post it on social media, include it in your podcast description, and share it on the Podcasting Discord.
To sum it up, the last five weeks’ growth tips are:
Transcribe a new or old episode of your podcast.
Add two promotional to-dos to your calendar: 1) share episode on social media, and 2) share episode to the podcasting Discord.
Find 5 podcasts that you love and share them on social. Bonus: leave each of them an intentional review. We wouldn’t mind if you tagged us too!

From the desk of Tink
Comedian Kiki Andersen finds the funny in the most uncomfortable corners of our culture. Sex. Politics. Religion. But in the digital age, what can and can’t be talked about at the dinner table has changed dramatically. Indecent is a podcast all about what’s off-limits and who sets the boundaries for today’s taboos. Through conversations with comedians, psychologists, journalists, theologians, and scientists, Kiki peels at the wallpaper of polite society on Indecent, where NSFW meets LMAO.

Meanwhile, in Podcast Therapy…
This week we had great Podcast Therapy sessions with:
Academic Survival – Thirty percent of students drop out of college during the 1st year. The transition from high school to college is a struggle for many students. Shandra L. McDonald interviews current and former college students about their freshman year experience and invites guests who share topics relevant to college life. Join her on the podcast that helps freshmen get to graduation.
Adoption: The Making of Me – Two adult adoptees, Sarah Reinhardt and Louise Browne, delve into all things adoption - from their perspectives as adult adoptees. Both were adopted shortly after birth, but they had very different experiences. Each season Sarah and Louise recap a chapter from a book centered on adoption and then interview a guest. These will be intimate conversations, but also fun - because Sarah and Louise know how to lighten things up and have a good time. They also have an uncanny ability to get to the heart of a subject with anyone that crosses their path - so conversations will take many turns.
During these sessions, we tackled questions about partnerships, pitching to other podcasts for interviews, pitching to apps, improving content, and more. If you’re interested in signing up for Podcast Therapy yourself, learn more here!
