šPodcast Marketing Lessons from Holiday Movies
That one list you didn't ask for. š Plus, a last-minute gift idea!
Iāve spent all of last month week watching and weeping over the best, the worst, and the cheesiest of holiday movies. Iāve also been sighing, humming, and dreaming about this.
Sooo, this was bound to happen. I would apologize for my cliched-ness but I canāt help myself. Here at Tink, we really like to commit to a theme.
Letās get to it!
āļø Seven podcast marketing lessons from holiday movies
1: Why reinvent the wheel if itās not broken
Holiday movies are absolute trope-centrals. Think - every Hallmark movie ever.Ā However, when tropes are executed well, they WORK! So, if certain ideas, such as making podcast marketing friends, setting up promo swaps, and sending pitches to newsletters work, why reinvent them? We donāt always need to find a way to think outside the box. Itās okay to define the box and do your best in it.
2: Thereās no shame in getting seasonal
If thereās one thing thatās true, itās this ā holiday movies embrace the seasonality of it all. They, often unabashedly, do things that would be strange in non-holiday times. (Have you ever tried watching an NCU movie in summer? Itās weird). Owing to this, people not just expect but also rejoice in their seasonalities. Podcasts can do the same by creating episodes and marketing campaigns that align with current events and seasons.Ā
3: An ensemble cast almost never disappoints
Iām so glad I am able to draw a podcast marketing lesson from Love Actually to tell you ā network and create something with your podcast friends. Collaborations on episodes or promotions can reach wider audiences. Never thought Iād say this but you wouldnāt want to be like Colin Firth here, would you?
Psstā¦Lauren Passell and Wil Williams are hosting a Podcast Group Therapy session on making podcast friends on January 19th. Join us?
4: Employ the power of nostalgia
Engage the nostalgia among your audiences (and give yourself a little planning break) by repurposing old episodes to highlight your podcastās milestones, or revisit popular topics from past episodes. If A Christmas Carol did it, who are we mere mortals to challenge the magic of nostalgia?
5: Invite an exchange of perspectives
Just like the character swap in The Holiday, invite guest hosts or swap places with another podcaster.Ā You never know the good a change of space and speed can do, both for you and your audiences.
6: Share your origin story Ā
How many times have we learned about how the tale of Santa Claus came to be? Yet, when itās done well, itās fantastic (see: Klaus). Consider sharing your origin story around this time to help audiences feel closer to you.Ā
7: Take a break when needed
We all know that bad things happen when our lead, that's aaaall business, doesn't take timely breaks. This is the season of rest and recovery. Whether from your podcast production or marketing, itās okay to take a little break from time to time. You donāt wanna be Buddyās dad from Elf now, do you?
