/ˈprōmō swäp/ noun: an agreement between two different podcasters to promote one another on their respective shows.; a great tool in a podcaster’s discovery tool belt.
Hi, I’m Lauren. My enthusiasm for promo swaps rivals the enthusiasm Flo has for Progressive Insurance. It’s one of the many things I’m going to be covering in Podcast Marketing Magic. Thank you for reading it. Remember: if you’d like me to help you set up a promo swap with your show, fill out this form. The more people who fill it out, the more swaps I can secure. And if you’d like some one-on-one help, sign up for Podcast Therapy.
Podcast marketing is…yes, I’ll say it. It’s an art. I can’t tell you how many times I talk to a podcaster who has created a beautiful show but hasn’t thought about how to market it. You should be spending 50% of your time on marketing, which is news that most people don’t want to hear.
My goals for this newsletter are to:
share my tricks
get you just as excited about podcast marketing as I am
feel empowered to do this stuff on your own
help you grow your show
I also want to facilitate a space where podcasters can swap with one another. Fill out this form if you’d like to sign up for a promo swap and I’ll see if I can match you up!
Note: I’m not perfect, I’m just sharing the way I work, and the challenging thing about podcast marketing is that it changes all the time. That makes it more fun, doesn’t it? Oh! We’re in for a good time! Email me about whatever.
First, allow me to introduce myself. I got my start in media in 2007 at Parenting magazine (the print edition!) and worked for a dating app, Barnes & Noble (where I launched their social media strategy,) a book publishing house, and a podcasting production studio…all before I started my company, Tink.
The original intent of Tink was to help authors get onto podcasts to promote their books. I didn’t think PR people in general knew how to work with podcasts. But as I started working with podcasters more, I started to realize how badly they needed help with marketing. So Tink has shifted to meet the needs of the people I’m working with. Now I help shows (like Family Secrets, American Hysteria, PEOPLE Every Day, and Our Body Politic) grow.
You can also sign up for my podcast discovery newsletter 👉Podcast the Newsletter👈, which is my BABY and like any mother, I would surely be able to uplift a car if needed, in order to save its life.
I also am an editor of Hark Audio, a really cool discovery app that makes podcast mixtapes. See an example of what Hark does here. I worked really hard on that! (I’d like to hear what you think about the app, too. It can help you with your marketing, which we can talk about later.)
So that’s me. Hi. Nice to meet you. I’ve already been talking too much, so in this first issue I’ll leave you with an exercise: if you listen to a lot of podcasts, you hear a lot of promo swaps. Don’t glaze over them. Think about them. Are they effective? Has the promo swap done a good job with the match and the copy? Did the promotion work on you? This will train your brain to think like a marketer and help you identify who you can work with to grown your shows for promo swaps, yes, but many other things that we will get into later.
Thanks for reading.
